SQUARE REINFORCING MESH

Square Reinforcing Mesh is manufactured from L grade ribbed wires to strengthen concrete slabs.

The structural integrity of a concrete slab is defined by the quality of the steel reinforcement hidden within it. Square Reinforcing Mesh provides a high-tensile skeletal framework that allows concrete to withstand heavy loads and natural thermal expansion. By distributing stress evenly across a multi-directional grid, mesh ensures that residential driveways, industrial floors, and commercial foundations remain stable and crack-free for decades.

Our Australian certified Square Reinforcing Mesh is available in a variety of diameters and spacing measurements to suit your project. Square mesh is a general-purpose mesh used in a variety of concrete applications, including walls, precast panels, house slabs, and driveway slabs. We stock square mesh in two sizes, 3m x 2.4m in WA and 4m x 2m in NSW, for SL62, SL63, SL72, SL81, SL82, SL92 and SL102 mesh; go here to see all the concrete mesh sizes. It’s important you have confidence and assurance every time you pour a concrete slab. That’s why we only use ACRS-accredited ribbed wires to manufacture our square reinforcement mesh. This ensures two things: less risk of product failure and your job conforms to Australia’s building standards.

Selecting the Right Grade for Your Project

Choosing the correct mesh gauge is essential for matching the reinforcement to the expected weight load. While all square mesh provides structural support, different diameters serve specific purposes:

  • Residential & Light Duty (SL62 & SL72): SL62 can be ideal for footpaths and garden sheds, depending on the state and ground conditions. SL72 is the industry standard for domestic house slabs and standard family driveways, providing the necessary tensile strength to prevent surface cracking in residential pours.

  • Medium to Heavy Residential (SL81 & SL82): These grades offer increased strength for heavy-duty driveways, multi-car garages, and small commercial workshop floors. By utilising thicker wire diameters, they provide a more robust reinforcement layer capable of supporting larger SUVs and utility vehicles.
  • Industrial & Civil (SL92 & SL102): These heavy-gauge meshes are engineered for warehouse floors, loading docks, and areas subjected to constant heavy-vehicle traffic. They are designed to distribute massive structural loads evenly across the slab to ensure long-term stability under extreme industrial pressure.

Precision Installation for Maximum Longevity

To ensure the steel performs its structural duty, proper placement during the pour is vital. Reinforcing mesh should never rest on the ground; it must be suspended using bar chairs to sit within the “tension zone” of the concrete, typically the top third of the slab.

For a continuous reinforcement web, sheets must be overlapped (lapping), depending on the type of mesh. A standard overlap of at least one full square, secured with tie wire, allows the load to transfer seamlessly across the entire surface area. When combined with a high-quality moisture barrier, these steps prevent “concrete cancer” and ensure the slab meets the design life intended by engineers.

Factors to Consider

  • Quantity: We work with you to calculate total tonnage and sheet counts to ensure you have exactly what is required for your pour without excessive waste.
  • Size: Selecting the right sheet dimensions, whether it’s 3m x 2.4m in WA or 4m x 2m in NSW, can significantly reduce the need for manual cutting on-site. Choosing the correct wire diameter and grid spacing (such as SL72 versus SL92) is also essential to meet the specific structural load requirements of your project.
  • Pick-up or Delivery: We offer the flexibility of pickup from any of our national trade centres to keep your project moving immediately. Alternatively, our specialised delivery fleet can transport large-scale orders directly to your site within 72 hours to save you the logistical challenge of handling heavy steel.
  • Galvanising: For projects located in coastal environments or high-corrosion areas, galvanised square mesh provides an extra layer of zinc protection against rust. While standard black mesh is ideal for most encased concrete slabs, specifying a galvanised finish (which can affect order lead times) ensures the long-term integrity of the steel in harsh conditions.

What is square mesh?

Square mesh is made from welded metal wires. It is a general-purpose mesh used to reinforce concrete in a variety of applications, including walls, precast panels, house slabs and driveway slabs. Different projects require different sizes of square mesh.

Where can I pick up square mesh?

You can pick up square reinforcing mesh from several Bestbar locations in Australia, including East Rockingham, Wangara, Adelaide, Darwin, Prestons, Truganina, Keysborough and Somerton. If you need your products delivered, we stock a variety of square mesh sizes that are ready to be delivered to your site – regardless of quantity. These are SL52, SL62, SL72, SL82, SL92 and SL102.

What is SL62-92 mesh?

In terms of reinforcement square mesh, ”SL” refers to “square ligatures”. The numbers refer to the spacing and diameter of the wires used for each product. For example, SL62 has 6-millimetre wires, which are on a grid of 200 millimetres apart.
